The Symphonic Year (1841) • The Year of Chamber Music (1842) • Paradise and Peri (1843) • Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy & the Leipzig Conservatory • Concert Tour to Russia • Enthusiasm for Bach • The Leipzig-Dresden Railway
In this room the Robert Schumann House presents the bust of Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy owned by Schumann. Furthermore the visitor may have a look at the joint letter from Robert and Clara Schumann asking Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy to be the godfather to their first daughter Marie as well as a portrait of Robert Schumann wearing a fur coat during his journey in Russia and his pen drawing of the Kremlin in Moscow. The exhibition also features a grand piano built by Clara Schumann’s cousin Wilhelm Wieck which, in combination with a pedal keyboard, can be used as a so-called pedal piano, enabling the pianist to play it with hands and feet similar to an organ. A model of the locomotive Saxonia, the first German railway between Leipzig and Dresden, travels at the touch of a button. The three rivalling piano actions common in Clara Schumann’s time can be experienced by pressing the keys of mechanical models
