Clara Schumann — Widow 1856-1896

Clara Schumann the Pianist • Clara Schumann the Editor • Brahms and the Children • Family treasures • Legacy

This room shows both portraits of Clara Schumann, painted by Franz von Lenbach in 1879, side by side exactly as the pianist had them in her dining room in Frankfurt. The exhibition encompasses Robert Schumann’s wooden letter box and the cotton bag Clara Schumann used to store notes and letters from Johannes Brahms. Furthermore the visitor may have a look at various concert playbills, the laurel wreath Clara Schumann received on the occasion of her 60th stage anniversary as well as her perfume bottle, testament and a plaster cast of her right hand made by Carl Gustav Carus.
